Captain John L. Chapin served in Company E of the 32nd "Texas" Division, of the 121st Infantry Regiment during World War II. Company E was comprised of mostly El Paso and Juarez born men, many of whom graduated from schools such as Bowie and El Paso High.
During his tenure of duty, Capt. Chapin was offered advancements in rank 5 times, however he turned these down so as to stay with his men. Capt. Chapin valiantly led "his boys" throughout much of the Italian Campaign. Company E, also known as "Easy Company", landed on the beaches at Salerno, Italy and continued to push north on the Italian peninsula towards Anzio. During the Battle of San Pietro, Capt. Chapin was wounded and was offered to be sent home. He declined this offer and rejoined his men to lead them across the Rapido River in January of 1944. It was during this battle that Capt. Chapin lost his life. Capt. Chapin and Staff Sgt. Segura were awarded the Silver Star for "magnificent courage and devotion to duty". |
